THE ROOTS OF AARANYAM
From a Father's Dream to a Living Forest
My parents, Subramanian and Shainy, came back to Kerala after 25 years in the Middle East with a simple dream – to live on a small farm surrounded by trees, vegetables and animals.
In the early 2000s, farming in Kerala was in crisis. Coconut pests, cheap produce from neighbouring states and rising labour costs had pushed many farmers to abandon their land. Fields lay fallow, and agriculture felt like a losing battle.
With very little formal training in agriculture but a lot of determination, my parents decided to do the opposite. On our ancestral seven‑acre plot in Kodungallur, they began experimenting with organic farming, integrated methods and elements of permaculture. They gave themselves five years to transform a weed‑choked, neglected property into a model farm.
They met that goal – and more. By combining traditional local wisdom with modern sustainable practices, they showed that organic farming could still be viable and inspiring. Over the last two decades, the farm has received local and state‑level recognition, and has been certified as a biodiversity plot – one of the few of its kind in Kerala.
My Father passed away in 2024, but his spirit is present in every corner of this land – in the trees he planted, the systems he designed and the people he encouraged. Aaranyam is our way of continuing that legacy of sharing and learning.
“Aaranyam” in Malayalam / Sanskrit means “forest”. With more than 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables, trees and medicinal plants, buzzing with bees and birds and home to ducks and cows, our vision is to nurture a vibrant farm‑forest that can inspire future farmers and give visitors a glimpse of the real Kerala. Welcome to Aaranyam.

Our Mission
Our mission is to offer an authentic experience of Kerala living, rooted in our farm, our heritage and our everyday life.
We want Muziris Aaranyam Farms to be:
A place where guests can feel, taste and learn how Kerala actually lives – in its kitchens, courtyards, fields and waterways.
A living classroom for culture, history and ecology, especially for younger generations and aspiring farmers.
A slow‑tourism retreat that encourages longer stays, deeper connections and more mindful travel.
Every experience we design is guided by three values: authenticity, care (for people and land), and sharing (of knowledge, stories and food).
Shainy Subramanian : The Keeper of the Farm & the Flame

At the heart of Aaranyam is Shainy, the woman who keeps the rhythm of the farm steady. After decades abroad, she has returned to her roots with a singular focus: nurturing this seven-acre sanctuary into a thriving ecosystem.
While she manages the daily operations of the farm with a small, dedicated team, Shainy’s true spirit is found in the details. You’ll see it in the vibrant orchids that greet you and the meticulously tended bonsai collection around the house—a testament to her patience and deep love for things that grow slowly and with care.
For our guests, the Aaranyam experience is often defined by Shainy’s kitchen. A master of traditional Kerala cuisine, she believes that the finest meals are those that oganic, authentic, and with a lot of love.
To share a meal at Shainy’s table is to truly understand the meaning of Kerala’s hospitality.
